About Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is a popular hill station that lies in the Satara District of Maharashtra. Located in the gorgeous Western Ghats, it is one of the very few evergreen spots in the world. Like many of the other hill stations, Mahabaleshwar too served as a summer get away for the Britishers during the uncomfortable scorching summer periods.

Mahabaleshwar literally translates to ‘God of Great Power’. It is also popularly called the ‘Land of Five Rivers' at it is at this point that the rivers Venna, Gayatri, Savitri, Koyna and Krishna originate.

Situated at a dizzying altitude of around 4,718 feet, this tourist destination covers a small expanse of around 150 sq km. It is close to the major metros Mumbai and Pune, 264 km and 117 km away respectively; thus serving as a perfect retreat from the crazy city life.

Authur’s point got its name after Arthur Mallet as he was the first man to come here and build a house.

The arrangement of rocks on the southern side is compared with the world notable stratification of rocks of the Grand Canyon of Colorado in the USA.

The Elephant’s Head Point is one of the best points to be visited in Mahabaleshwar. The cliffs which overhang resemble an elephant’s head and trunk. Thus the point got its name as the Elephant’s Head Point.

Pratapgad Fort is a mountain fort built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is at a distance of 24 km from the hill station of Mahabaleshwar. The fort holds a sturdy view of coastal Konkan. The Bhavani Temple and Afzal Khan’s tomb are other places of interest.

In the name of her beautiful daughter called ‘Kate’, Sir john malcom (a Britisher) named this point of Mahabaleshwar. Possibly she liked to come at this height of 1280 meter and Echo her voice back. Kates point is lively attracting every tourist and also called ‘Echo Point’ and a must place to see.

It is facinating to see the barren deep valley Savitri on the left & shallow green valley on the right. It is more facinating to know that Arthur’s seat is the only place showing geographical distinction of kokan & Desh (Deccan), two territories of Mahabaleshwar, so clear & so near.
